Bob (Robert) , was in Knock from 1956 to 1960. Contemporaries at school remember him as a quiet and thoughtful student excelling in maths and science and also in woodworking where some of the furniture pieces he made during his time at college have long since stood the test of time. Bob briefly joined the Vins before entering the Pallottines to study for the priesthood, whilst also attending UCD. Deciding against continuing clerical studies he took up a Masters scholarship in computing at the University of Winnipeg in Canada, and worked in London before returning to Ireland to Cara Computing as a Systems Analyst. Throughout his working life Bob went on to develop and install many of the earliest banking systems and booking systems for airlines and hotels in both Ireland and abroad over a period of years.

Bob married Marie Glynn from Cork in 1974, living briefly in Malahide before Bobs career took them to Cork where they had four children, Elaine, Michelle, Barry and Ruth. They moved back to Dublin in 1989 putting roots down in Greystones where Bob and Marie were active and popular members of the local community. Bobs career continued in the rapidly developing IT world and he was to foresee at an early stage the development of ‘cloud’ computing. He enjoyed travelling with his family and his interests and skills in sailing and woodworking continued coming together in the construction of a small sailing boat.

Bob will always be remembered as quiet, gentle and generous, seeing always the humorous side, but could have a tenacious grasp in dealing any issues in his life. None was so real as in his dealing with the diagnosis of the early condition that developed over a period of years to curtail the enjoyment of his later years and of the lives and achievements of his now adult family and grandchildren in whom he was always so proud.

Bob passed away on the 30 May 2015 in Greystones at 72 years of age. He is missed by Marie, after 41 years of marriage, his children and grandchildren and sons in law, and siblings Mary Sheppard, Pauline Jackson and Noel, for whom he set a high standard when he arrived at ‘Knock’ all those years ago.
