We will all have very fond memories of Niall at Knock (1981-1987).
He tried his hand at rugby and was very good at it even though his loyalties primarily lay with the rounder ball, as Niall was an avid Liverpool supporter and an even greater supporter of Dublin GAA - he trained the u10's in both football and hurling at St Jude's GAA where his son Cian excelled under his watchful eye.
He was also just as happy and entertaining playing Jacob in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”.
Niall was universally liked and will be sorely missed.
Mairead has lost a loving husband and Cian a dedicated father. To them, the wider Whelan family and friends, we extend our heartfelt condolences.
Requiescat in Pace.
For Niall from Uncle John - with love
Tell me
What did you not do, Niall?
Always it seems on the go
Biking here, football there
Halfway up Mount Everest
While I barely manage the stairsWhat did you not do, Niall?
Studying hard, with distinctions won
Pursuing work wherever it led
And still finding time to build
Your mother's garden shedWhat did you not do, Niall?
Finding the girl of your dreams in Mairéad
And making a beautiful home -
for you all plain sailing
But, as for supporting Liverpool
Well, we'll forgive you that one failingWhat did you not do, Niall?
Giving your all for your pride and joy
It's plain for all of us to see
Your beautiful, beautiful boy
Is truly your legacyWhat did you not do, Niall?
Seldom pausing to take a break
Such a bundle of energy
Packing into your too brief time
A full life, maybe two, even threeWhat did you not do, Niall?
Though all too soon your race was run
Even as you took your final call
You gifted life to others
Generous as ever to a faultNow what do we do without you, Niall?
We walk on, we walk on
With hope in our hearts, lán de bhrón
Consoled only in knowing that
You will NEVER, walk alone
You will NEVER walk alone
