Niall came to us in 1934 and spent five very happy years with us, before embarking on a career in Insurance, initially with Hibernian, and then with Irish Shipping, where after completing his LLB and being called to the bar, he became a globally recogonised expert on maritime law. In 1963 he was a founding member of the Irish Maritime Law Association which to this day makes a contribution to the work of the Comite Maritime International (that drafts various International conventions on maritime law) which is altogether out of proportion to its size or to Ireland’s status as a maritime state. This was evidenced by the fact that when the constitution of the CMI was revised in 1972 its new five-man Executive Council was composed of an American, an Englishman, a Frenchman, and Italian and an Irishman, namely Niall McGovern.
We remember Niall as a most loyal past man who served as Union President in 1969-70 and who also paid us the ultimate compliment when he sent his three sons - Barry of class'66, Brian of class'68 and Niall of class'72 to be educated with us. To them, their sister Helen and the wider McGovern family, we extend our heartfelt condolences.
Requiescat in Pace.
