David was born on 4 November 1954 in Limerick City to Hugh O'Donnell, a pre-eminent accountant in the city and his wife Edna. He had one sister, Elaine (O'Malley) and a son Alec, whose burgeoning career as a pilot with Aer Arann, David followed keenly. He died, following an illness on 23rd April 2014.

Following his primary education with the Jesuits at the Crescent College, Limerick, David spent six years at Castleknock where he as a very popular member of class '72. He was successful academically and played soccer and tennis, at which he excelled and it was to become a life long passion, from representing Knock in inter-schools competition to many years later became president of Limerick Lawn Tennis Club.

After college studies and training, David qualified as an accountant and set up his own practice in Limerick many years ago. As Fr Denis, Parish Priest of Liscannor, remarked at the funeral mass, David represented a valuable selection of clients, including the Benedictine monks at Glenstal Abbey, displaying qualities of integrity, dependability, and hard work which were also much remarked on privately by mourners at David's funeral .

Throughout his life, David had a great fondness of West Clare, spending childhood holidays in Kilkee and the last years of his life at Liscannor Co Clare supported by his partner Jacquie. To Jacquie, Alec, Elaine and her husband Mike and all the family, deepest sympathies are extended.
