Union Debate 2019
On Thursday 31st January we held the Union Debate out at the College where participants argued for and against the motion that “This House Would Ban Smartphones for U-16s”. What followed were lively exchanges and an excellent floor debate that saw many students offer their own contribution on the issue. Adjudicators Dick Wafer and Myles Kirby, in an Oscars style ceremony, ultimately decided that it was not La La Land but in fact, Mr Shane Cassidy who was to be awarded the accolade of the best speaker on the night.
The event had been preceded by the Junior Mace Competition which had taken place throughout the day and was organised by members of the Senior Debating Society. The Union was delighted to commission a new perpetual trophy for this competition and this was presented before the start of the Union Debate.
Junior Mace winners - Jack Glennon & Alastair McAndrew
Best floor contribution from a student - Killian O'Loughlin Brophy
Best overall floor contribution - Caroline Murtagh O'Neill
Overall a very enjoyable night for all in attendance and a clear sign that this event is now a regular fixture in our calendar.
