The Navy & Sky Blue of Castlebar RFC

Any who have seen Castlebar RFC in action may have wondered about their Navy & Sky Blue colours. Well a mystery no longer for Michael Heverin, the editor of The Nationalist in Clonmel confirms -

The first set of jerseys on the reformation of the club were donated by my father, Michael Heverin, who selected the colours of Navy and Sky Blue, because he was a past pupil of Castleknock College. They seemed to go down well for the colours have stuck to this day.

A long list of past men have since played for Castlebar RFC including Johnny McCormack '68, Mick McCormack '70, Tom Moran '67, Tom Durcan '67, Paddy Bourke '71 and many others.

Incidentally, Fr. Tom Davitt, '46, further confirms that Knock adopted these colours from the two blues of Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He also assures us that is the only rugby related fact in his repertoire.

Whilst we're down west, it would be remiss of us not to congratulate Alan Rowe, '82, on his election as President of Ballina RFC. Alan who was Head Prefect in 1981-82 was the eldest of four brothers at Knock, ahead of Karl (full-back '83 SCT finalists), Conor ('86) and Patrick ('93 House Captain) and all were following in the footsteps of their father John, class '57.

We wish Alan all the best for the year and are confident all will go well, what with his Chairman being John Raftery, class '83. John of course is married to Nicola, who would be a daughter of the late Brian Moylett, class '45, and sister of Mick Moylett, class '78.

So Knock rule Rugby out West!
