2016 is the 11th birthday of Maths Week Ireland, and takes place from October 15th - 23rd
Maths Week Ireland is an all-Ireland celebration of Mathematics and its applications and is a partnership of over 50 groups - universities, institutes of technology, colleges, museums, libraries, visitor centres, professional bodies indeed any group that sees the importance of maths and the importance of promoting maths.
Founded and coordinated by Eoin Gill and Sheila Donegan of Calmast, Waterford Institute of Technology’s STEM outreach centre. The festival has now grown to be the biggest festival of its kind in the world with 250,000 participating in 2014. Maths Week Ireland is an all-island festival and enjoys the support of the Department of Education and Skills North – South Cooperation Unit, the Department of Education Northern Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland along with private sector funding from ESB, Xilinx and CRH.
So what better time to revisit the recipients of the Maths Gold Medal at Knock.
This probably has been awarded since the foundation of the College but thus far, as listed below, we have only catalogued the winners since the introduction of the Leaving Certificate in 1925. Also listed are the winners of the Applied Mathematics Prize albeit with some significant gaps back to Alec Hannigan who took first place in Ireland for this subject in the 1935 Leaving Certificate.
