"This house should celebrate the 1916 Rising"
Past-Present-Expert All-Star cast Debate the “Easter Rising”
1916 DEBATE
The Union in conjunction with the College is delighted to announce a special evening of debate in the College to take place at 7.30pm on Thursday, 28th April. In days gone by, 'Past vs. Present' was a regular fixture on the College Debating calendar, and we return with a variant on that theme, in this the centenary year of the 'Easter Rising'.
The Debate will be chaired by past man Brian O’Connell, class '71, ex RTE London Correspondent.
The Motion is:
"That this house believes we should celebrate the 1916 Rising"
Speakers on the evening will include Paul Gallagher, class '72, SC, former Attorney General; Michael Collins, class '74, SC, former Chairman of the Bar Council and 1999 President of the Union; Prof. Eunan O’ Halpin, Professor of Contemporary Irish History at Trinity College Dublin and Patsy McGarry, Religious Affairs Correspondent at the Irish Times. And perhaps on the evening we'll even see some of Joseph Holloway, class 1876 or the Meehan Brothers weaved into the argument?
The line-up will be completed by two current students of the College who will each take one side of the Motion.
It promises to provide a lively evening of discussion, and some tea & bun will follow thereafter. So an opportunity to catch up with good friends in the relaxed setting of your old Alma Mater. The evening is open to past men and their guests, and is a free event, but to enable us cater for numbers, RSVP if attending.
I look forward to seeing many of you on the night.
Best wishes,
Lorcan
