BASKETBALL GOT under way quickly this season and it soon became evident that we had a very good team. B. Guerin and B. Lowe were elected captains and we were fortunate to have Fr. Walsh to train us. After assiduous practice we began to look hopefully at the recently presented trophy.

CASTLEKNOCK V. TERENURE

We travelled to Portobello on 18th April to oppose Terenure in the first round of 'the Cup matches. This was the first time our team played indoor but we quickly adapted ourselves to the fast floor, and due to our excellent shooting and fine teamwork we emerged victorious, 27-14. The game was very exciting and a very high standard of basketball was exhibited by both teams. Chances were missed in the early minutes by both sides until after four minutes play T. Cleary found the net for 'Knock. Terenure replied with a fine score and after the first quarter the score was even with 4 pts. each. From that moment everything went right for 'Knock and by the end of the first half we had established a clear lead of 16-8. Spearhead of the attack was T. Cleary ably supported by B. Lowe, left forward, and between them they did most of the scoring. In defence J. Morris had a very sound game. B. Guerin's height was invaluable and time and time again he intercepted loose balls from Terenure and sent our forwards into the attack.

CASTLEKNOCK v. BELCAMP

The semi-final against Belcamp marked our " exit" from the competition. We took too long to settle down, and due to the bustling tactics of our opponents we were outplayed in all departments of the game in the early stages. Belcamp were adepts at fielding high balls and this gave them a marked advantage. In the second half we suffered a heavy loss when B. Guerin retired through injury. At this time we were well behind, 18-7. In the closing minutes we staged an amazing recovery and all but snatched victory. The final score was 28-23. Scorers for 'Knock were B. Lowe 9, T. Cleary 8" M. Quirke 3, F. Morris 2 and B. Guerin 1. We congratulate Belcamp on a fine victory and wish them the best of luck in the final.
